Sweet: This is a lovely mix of sweet corn landraces, grexes, and a few named varieties. A lot of coastal and short-season corn are present, including a large contribution from Shea Burns of Nye Ranch, one of the growers in our farmer support program. The mix last year produced a lot of great plants with tasty cobs for me, and I expect this year’s mix will be just as amazing.

Grain: Yet again, we were fortunate enough to receive so many contributions from donors this year to create perhaps the most diverse mix of corn available in a single packet. Last year’s mix was incredible, and I believe this year is equally so. You will find dents, flints, flours, and an array of colors present. We received so much corn that we increased the packet fill. Expect a lot of corn seed to start your adventures in gardening this year. Plant densely.

Popping: This is an interesting mix that contains two developed popcorn grexes, teosinte, and progeny of a popcorn and teosinte cross in its third generation. You will notice small cobs or pieces of cobs are included in packets. These are from the popcorn x teosinte crosses and may contain seeds that were not free threshing. Grow them and select for free threshing again. I thresh the teosinte x popcorn cobs by drying them, putting them in a pillow case, and then whacking it against a hard surface a few times until most of the seeds have threshed out. Whatever does not thresh out can be thrown away or planted again and selected for free threshing. There is a lot of fun in this mix to experiment with.

Packets contain approximately 200 seeds.

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.

About the Seed Steward

Hi, I'm Lowell. I live in North Florida where summers are rainy, hot, and humid, with high bug pressure. These conditions are a challenge for many crops, so I turned to the growing styles of adaptation agriculture and natural farming. I view the results of these styles as a journey in abundance and diversity -- the myriad ways in which the world expresses itself -- and enjoy saving seeds from a variety of crops, with a focus on dry legumes and grains.
