Squash is a member of the Cucurbita genus and originated in Central America and Mexico as a wild plant. Archaeological evidence suggests that squash was first domesticated in Mexico between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago. Seeds travelled from Turtle Island to Europe and beyond, and have been adopted and adapted by cultures around the world.

When you order this kit, you're joining a nationwide project to grow local seed supplies. Use it to engage with your local community and inspire new seed savers.

The seeds in our packets are a diverse mix of heirlooms that were allowed to cross-pollinate in previous generations, providing the greatest opportunity for selecting vigorous plants under your local growing conditions, as well as reducing the barriers for home seed savers (there are fewer requirements for isolation). We teach people to celebrate community-selected seeds, flavor, and diversity over uniformity.

Kit contains 20 zines and 20 packets of diverse Cucurbita moschata (recommended for hotter climates) or Cucurbita maxima (recommended for cooler climates) seed.
