Delicious Mix: A diverse blend of orange and green-fleshed melons, sourced from twenty one gardeners across varied climates and soil types. Ten percent of the seeds are rare early-maturing varieties from our 2024 GRIN seed increase project, including landrace melons from India, Turkey, China, Japan, Cuba, and Canada. Continue selection for the most delicious and vigorous melons.

Polar Mix: Many of these are descendants of the Lofthouse-Oliverson melons, selected for being early and delicious. Size and color will vary widely. There are extra seeds to account for growing in a non-ideal melon climate, so please continue the selection for germinating in cool soils, and producing tasty melons in cool temperatures. Plant all the seeds and thin them through the season. Note: While these are cooler tolerant than commercial varieties, they are still a heat loving species. (Don’t plant too early).

Landrace Discovery Mix: In an effort to re-introduce lost genetic diversity and older traits, Going to Seed selected eight promising landraces from the GRIN genebank, originally from India, Turkey, China, Japan, Cuba, and Canada. They were grown by 15 volunteers in varied climates around the US in 2024. The plants displayed lots of diversity, some were resistant to disease, and we’re excited to offer a mix of these melons to you this year. Some may not be as sweet as modern melons- but look for complex and unusual flavors, disease resistance, and unusual growth patterns.

Packets contain approximately 30 seeds.

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.
