Vigna unguiculata & umbellata
Vigna
Vigna
This mix mostly just contains Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) with a few Rice Beans (Vigna umbellata) mixed in. Contributions came from 18 growers across the US. Such a wide range of diversity & colors are represented in this mix, from Black Eyed Pea types, a few Yard Long Bean types, Bush types, Vine/pole types, all mixed for maximum diversity of the Vigna unguiculata species. The rice beans (V. umbellata) belong to subgenus Ceratotropis & therefore don't cross with cowpeas (V. unguiculata) which belong to a different subgenus Plectrotropis. Rice beans are very easy to tell apart from cowpeas by paying attention to the seed hilum (The "Bellybutton" of the bean seed), Rice beans have longer seed hilum that stick out more vs Cowpeas have shorter seed hilums that don't stick out much. This only matters for those who wish to keep species separate.
Packets contain approximately 100 seeds.

Are seeds really free?
Are seeds really free?
Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.
When will I get my seeds?
When will I get my seeds?
Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers. Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.
How are seeds packaged?
How are seeds packaged?
Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.

About the Seed Steward
Hello! Issa me Professor Porcupine!
I forage for wild edible plants & research all kinds of plant crops. My mission is to improve/domesticate as many wild edibles as I can in my lifetime while re-domesticating & re-wilding many cultivated crops, by making wide crosses & potentially inventing new crop species/landraces in the process. Currently I live in an apartment with no land access, so I encourage others who do.
