Wantonly Wild: (Solanum pennellii) This population descends from a number of GRIN varieties, and one commercial variety — grown together with crossing encouraged. Plants grew in coastal California, in pots, using Happy Frog compost, under conditions reminiscent of their homeland lomas conditions — cool air, regular moisture, and watering by misting rather than soaking.

This species acted as an ancestor of the “Profoundly Promiscuous and Totally Tasty Tomatoes” project. From S. pennellii came some of that project’s defining traits:
• promiscuous flowers that invite crossing
• unusual flavors and aromas
• relational fertility — plants that want community, not isolation

Breeding system (important)
Solanum pennellii uses a self-incompatible breeding system. Individual plants cannot set seed alone. Please grow many plants. Crowding helps fertility. More neighbors means more pollen, more seed, and a fuller expression of the species’ character.

What to expect
• Variable plant form and vigor
• Flowers that readily accept foreign pollen
• Small inedible fruits with distinctive aromatic profiles
• Genetic contribution toward crossing behavior, flavor nuance, and resilience

Grow it as a community, not a specimen.
Due to limited seed, and its high value to tomato breeding we ask that you coddle the plants, and return seed. It prefers misting, fast draining soil, low fertility, and afternoon shade. Treat it like a fog-watered desert perennial.

Packets contain about 100 seeds

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.
