Promiscuous Returned: All of these tomatoes should be descendants of Joseph Lofthouse’s promiscuous tomato project, which seeks to return wild genetics to inbred domestic tomatoes. Those who returned seed made thoughtful selections and saved seed from the best plants they found amongst their grow outs. There is not much of this seed- but what there is, may be highly useful. We greatly appreciate seed returns of these genetics.

Obligate Outcrossing: This mix contains the offspring of Joseph's careful selections for self-incompatibility. These tomatoes may thus have the same breeding system as tomatillos which allows greater resilience by ensuring some heterozygosity. Heterozygosity is when living creatures have more than one allele of the same gene- which is only possible in outbreeding crops and is naturally lost in most self-compatible tomatoes. F1 hybrid tomatoes are deliberately created each year by manual pollination of two self-compatible tomato varieties. These hybrids have several benefits including greater vigor and improved earliness. With these self-incompatible tomatoes that hybridization should be automatic, and we hope that the result will be tomatoes with the benefits of hybrids but from which new hybrid seed can be saved each year with just the aid of bumblebees. With these you must grow more than one plant -- preferably many plants and have adequate bumblebee pollination in your garden. These tomatoes are quite rare, and we greatly appreciate grow reports and seed returns of these genetics.

Packets contain about 50 seeds

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.

About the Seed Steward

William Schlegel is an educator and botanist. As an educator he loves to teach students about botany, plant breeding, seeds, and the natural world. As a botanist he is fascinated by the conservation of plants and the effects of climate change on sustainable food systems. He sees plant breeding as a way citizen scientists can help adapt their communities to climate change. He is furthest along on plant breeding projects with tomatoes and fava beans.
