Pepo squash love cross pollination, and adapt quickly to growing in new conditions. The descriptions that came with the seeds include, "no-till", "selected for flavor", "grown with minimal irrigation".

Winter Mix: Saved from fruits that were delicious when harvested ripe at the end of the season. Seeds were contributed from four different locations across the United States.

Summer Mix:  Saved from fruits that were delicious when harvested unripe as summer squash. Seeds were contributed from seven different locations across the United States.

Hulless Mix: This grex was contributed by farmer grantee Sydney Grange, who grows with Earthlings Veganic Farm in Mendocino, California. Pumpkin seeds are a high-fat, high-protein food particularly suitable for a vegan diet. Seven varieties were grown out together in 2024 a cool summer area, under low-till and minimal input conditions, and allowed to cross pollinate. In 2025, the offspring were planted, and these seeds will be planted again for the the "magical" year three. Read more about Sydney's project.

Packets contain approximately 30 seeds.

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.
