Kabocha Mix: emphasizes fruit with kabocha/buttercup characteristics - small to medium size with dark orange, thick, dryish flesh that is sweet and nutty in flavor. Buttercup, Red Kuri, Uncle David’s Dakota Dessert, and Sunspot varieties among others are represented. We’ve included some Hidatsa and Lower Salmon River squash seeds to increase the genetic diversity while also maintaining the sweet, dryish flesh of traditional kabocha varieties.

The Other Ones Mix: a blend of over 20 contributions from around the country, including the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, the high desert of S. Utah, and Texas. Plants were selected to be pest-resistant, drought-tolerant, and to germinate in cool soils and resist light frost. Fruits selected for good shelf life with bright or dark orange, good-tasting flesh, and edible skin in some cases. Variety genetics include Blue Hubbard, Lakota Hubbard, Candy Roaster, Lower Salmon River, Lofthouse maxima landrace, kabocha-type and unnamed varieties, including from previous GTS mixes. Try to plant every seed in the packet since not all are expected to grow well in your location.

Packets contain approximately 25 seeds.

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.

About the Seed Steward

My name is Debbie Ang and I am a home gardener living in Utah at an elevation of 4300 ft (zone 7a) and <20” rain/yr.  Squash are one of my favorite plants because of the beautiful vines and the wide range of tastes, shapes, colors and sizes of fruits.  Some varieties store well for months and do not require any special preservation techniques, perfect for a lazy person like me!
