Description

This year we received seeds from more than 20 contributors. There are some seeds we didn’t quite have time or enough seeds to put in their own categories. We still want to share these valuable seeds! They were provided by individual contributors but may still be very diverse.

We’re calling this the Serendipity Box, inspired by the serendipity seed swaps in our community.

Note: these seeds have not yet been packed, so exact counts are not available. We will do our best to provide generous quantities depending on availability.

The following seeds are available (quantities are limited):

Black Radish

Grown in heavy clay soil in BC.

Thornless Honey Locust

Harvested from trees in Ottawa. They do not need to be stratified but must be scarified to allow for germination. Clip the seed coat with nail clippers or deeply scratch with sand paper and soak in water for 24 hours. If they do not triple in bulk, scratch some more. They will then germinate in three to four days.

Black Locust

Seed collected in Beachburg, ON. The seeds need to be scarified and stratified for 60 days to promote germination. Alternatively, they can be given a hot water treatment and then stratified.

Asparagus (out of stock)

A mix of seeds provided by an Ontario contributor. Includes seeds from a neighbor's garden, and seeds from likely escaped domestic varieties growing in a woodlot.

Flower Mix

A mix of echinacea, calendula, and black eyed susan seeds. Grown in BC.

Wild Chives

Grown in Alberta. 2024 harvest.

Tomatillo

A Quebec grex of 6+ varieties grown in 2018. Germination was around 50% as of 2025.

Colored celery Mix (out of stock)

A mix from Alberta grown in in 2025. Expect several different colors!

Mixed Brassica Juncea Greens

An early, annual greens mix now in its third year. This population includes a wide range of colorful annual mustards along with leafy cabbage-type greens, and likely includes some annual, feral gai lan. These greens establish quickly in cool soil, are ready well before lettuce, and go to seed early enough to naturalize even in cold-winter regions where biennial brassicas like kale cannot overwinter.

Daikon Radish

Grown by a contributor in Northern Ontario.

Lovage

Grown by a contributor in Northern Ontario.

Sorghum

Gaolian Voskovidnyj Sorghum, grow in Quebec in 2022. 75% germination rate (03/2025)

A variety well suited for our Northern climates!

Barley

A grex of 10+ varieties grown in Quebec in 2022. 90% germination rate (03/2025)

Due to time constraints, these seeds were not processed. Expect lots of plant material along with the seeds.

Oats

A grex of 15+ varieties grown in Quebec in 2022. 95% germination rate (03/2025)

Due to time constraints, these seeds were not processed. Expect lots of plant material along with the seeds.

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.
