Cicerchia is also known as "grass pea." It is a hardy, vining legumes, and a single seed can grow into a 1-2 ft wide and 2 ft tall, or bigger, bush in the right conditions. It has a similar cold tolerance to peas and can handle frosts and freezes. It should be planted at the same time as peas, but with larger seed distances, anywhere from 6-18 inches. The larger spacing is due to the fact that it will produce many lateral shoots, each growing into its own vine. It will take advantage of something to climb on, but does not require a trellis. In places with mild winters, fall planting produces larger plants in spring. This is a mix of white, brown, and mottled cicerchia. White seeded types produce mostly white flowers, and brown and mottled seed types produce stunning blue and pink flowers. I harvest by pulling the plant once ¾ or more of the plant has dried down and then hanging or storing somewhere where it can continue to dry out. Then I thresh the plants using a pillowcase and winnow.

Be warned that eating the seeds consistently (every day for weeks) is known to cause paralysis. While you will unlikely get enough of a crop to eat from this packet in the first year, be cautious about eating too many in the future. Rancho Gordo sells a white variety if you are eager to cook with them.

Packets contain approximately 35 seeds.

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.

About the Seed Steward

Hi, I'm Lowell. I live in North Florida where summers are rainy, hot, and humid, with high bug pressure. These conditions are a challenge for many crops, so I turned to the growing styles of adaptation agriculture and natural farming. I view the results of these styles as a journey in abundance and diversity -- the myriad ways in which the world expresses itself -- and enjoy saving seeds from a variety of crops, with a focus on dry legumes and grains.
