This Tepary Bean mix represents different types, including Blue Speckled, Black Tepary, White Tepary, Sacaton, Local Pueblo varieties, many of which were originally from Native Seed Search. Contributions came from 4 growers across the US. Some Tepary beans in this mix were grown with no inputs in 100+ degree August weather in West Texas, meaning they have adaptive genetics for extreme heat & drought conditions. Generally Tepary beans (Phaseolus acutifolius) are considered a more drought tolerant species than Common Beans (P. vulgaris) & Runner Bean (P. coccineus). All 3 of these species belong to the same subgenus Vulgaris, meaning with some effort they can all hybridize with each other to form an interspecies landrace -- super useful for advanced breeders seeking additional diversity outside the Tepary Bean Species.

Packets contain approximately 100 seeds.

Are seeds really free?

Our mission is to make diverse seeds available to everyone. Although the seeds are free, you will need to pay for shipping. In addition, we ask you to consider making a donation to cover program costs. This allows us to make seed free for those who need it.

When will I get my seeds?

Seeds will ship within a week of ordering. This program is run by dedicated and hardworking volunteers.  Going to Seed is not a seed company. You may receive packages that have less than the stated number of seeds, germination rates may not meet the federal standards, shipping may be slower than you prefer, or there may be any other number of unanticipated glitches. Please be patient with us as we improve the standards over time.

How are seeds packaged?

Seeds are packed in moisture proof, 100% compostable materials. We recommend saving this packet to fill and send back to the program.

About the Seed Steward

Hello! Issa me Professor Porcupine!
I forage for wild edible plants & research all kinds of plant crops. My mission is to improve/domesticate as many wild edibles as I can in my lifetime while re-domesticating & re-wilding many cultivated crops, by making wide crosses & potentially inventing new crop species/landraces in the process. Currently I live in an apartment with no land access, so I encourage others who do.
