August Newsletter - Harvest Season Begins

For many of us, seed crops of biennials and early spring plantings are getting ready for harvest and processing. Here in Northern California, I’m processing kale seed and falling in love with beautiful brassicas all over again. I’m also ready for your contributions to our Seed Share Program! You can now send in your home-grown seeds any time, to a single location. Review the guidelines, then fill out the quick form linked there, and we’ll email you a postage paid shipping label. Remember that contributors will get first access to the new mixes when they are available.

The farmers in our Farmer Support Program have also been busy growing and adapting their crops. Read more about their projects on our website.

Upcoming Events

This weekend! Joseph Lofthouse and Holly Hansen are hosting a Garden Party  in Croyden, Utah on August 24th. If you’re in the area, stop by for a tour, plant talk, and snacks. Can’t make it in person? You can join the tour over Zoom.

Joseph and Julia will be speaking at the upcoming Heirloom Expo in Ventura, CA (September 10-12). Going to Seed will have a table where we will be distributing brochures and seed mixes. If you’re attending the event, I hope you’ll stop by!

Joseph is heading to Europe for the International Farmer Seed Conference in Antibes, France in October. View the evolving schedule in English.  Our European Going to Seed team will have a booth at the conference, so drop by! Thanks to a generous donation from our Advisory Team member Katie Wheeler, the whole conference will be recorded and made available for free.  Following the conference, Joseph is heading on a speaking tour for the rest of October. A generous donor has covered his airfare, but additional funds are needed to support his European tour. Help spread the message of Adaptation Gardening by contributing to his fundraising campaign.

On the Podcast

In the latest episode, Shane talks to Paul Ward as he reflects on a lifetime of experience breeding maize, tepary beans, and landrace wheat in temperate Australia.

Shane will release one more podcast next month, and then will continue these conversations on his own channel, Zero Input Agriculture.  Have you enjoyed these conversations over the last year? Let Shane know! We deeply appreciate the immense amount of time he has spent and all of the wonderful conversations he has shared through the podcast.
