These tomatoes may thus have the same breeding system as tomatillos which allows greater resilience by ensuring some heterozygosity. Heterozygosity is when living creatures have more than one allele of the same gene- which is only possible in outbreeding crops and is naturally lost in most self-compatible tomatoes. F1 hybrid tomatoes are deliberately created each year by manual pollination of two self-compatible tomato varieties. These hybrids have several benefits including greater vigor and improved earliness. With these self-incompatible tomatoes that hybridization should be automatic, and we hope that the result will be tomatoes with the benefits of hybrids but from which new hybrid seed can be saved each year with just the aid of bumblebees. With these you must grow more than one plant -- preferably many plants and have adequate bumblebee pollination in your garden. I did find some suspected self compatible plants in my 2025 grow out- and thinned them out (rogued). Its important to rogue the 2026 grow out or to save seeds only from the best plants that refuse to self and have stigmas that stick out of the anther cone.
